The project location was already a challenge in and of itself. Davao being a city prone to earthquakes, SM Lanang required careful consideration of ground conditions and resilience. In areas where seismic activity is a significant design factor, ensuring the stability of a structure began the moment AGES stepped foot on the site.
Adding to the challenge, portions of the Lanang area are characterized by relatively soft surface soils. While suitable for many developments, these conditions often require engineers to look deeper underground for stronger and more reliable support layers. For large structures such as shopping malls, deep foundations using piles are commonly selected to safely transfer structural loads to competent soil or rock.
To verify that these foundations could perform as intended, comprehensive pile testing procedures were conducted during construction. Advanced testing methods, including Pile Dynamic Analysis (PDA) and Low Strain Pile Integrity Testing (PIT), were utilized to assess both the load-bearing capacity and structural condition of the piles.
PDA provides valuable information regarding pile performance under dynamic load conditions, while PIT helps identify potential defects or irregularities with the pile shaft. Together these foundation testing methods provide engineers with critical data to support safe and reliable construction.
By implementing rigorous pile testing and quality assurance measures, the project team helped ensure that SM Lanang Premier was built on a foundation capable of supporting generations of shoppers, employees, and visitors.
